The franchise is a spin-off of the Drakengard video game series and is known for incorporating various video game genres within the game itself for a unique experience. Nier gained popularity with the release of Nier: Automata, the sequel to Nier, that takes place in the future and focuses on androids 2B and 9S. With the critical and commercial success of Nier: Automata, the franchise has expanded to other media forms that includes a popular anime series.
